CURIOSITY didn’t kill the cat – but SAVED it – after a furry feline was discovered by firefighters in a wardrobe three days after a blazing house fire.

Flames tore through three properties in Rugby on Friday after a fire in a garage quickly spread.

The pet cat, named Cat, was thought to have run off during the fire, or worse still, succumbed to the flames.

But when crews were helping a family recover personal belongings from the property on Monday, they were amazed to hear meowing coming from a bedroom.

On inspection, crews found Cat, hiding in the wardrobe, where he had been since the fire.

A spokesman for the service added: “The owners were clearly overjoyed to find him as they thought he had run off during the fire. “Despite everything Cat appeared to be in good health and is none the worse for his ordeal. “He is now back with his owners being suitably spoilt.” Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to tackle the blaze in Oatland Drive, Cawston, at around 3.15pm on Friday, May 5.

Since the incident a Go Fund Me page has been set up to help support two families, one with a young child, whose homes were damaged.

The page read: “As many people are aware and for those that aren’t, on Friday 5th May 2017 a fire, which started in the car port in Oatland Drive at 3pm, burnt down two adjoining houses leaving two families, one with a small child, devastated and with nothing left.

“I am hoping that humanity and generosity will shine through, so I’ve set up a donation page.”
