Robins lines up ‘plenty’ of signings
ROBINS PROMISES MORE ON WAY AFTER THIRD CAPTURE
COVENTRY City manager Mark Robins says even more signings are to come after landing his third player of the summer.
The Sky Blues boss has moved quickly since the end of the season, and Thursday’s signing of striker Marc McNulty was quickly followed up with the capture of Northampton Town central defender Rod McDonald yesterday.
The Cobblers stopper, 25, has joined City on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee after finding his first-team opportunities limited at Sixfields.
McDonald made 37 appearances for Northampton, scoring three goals and winning the League Two title in 2016.
Boss Robins told the club website: “I am delighted we have signed Rod, who is a player who was interesting a number of clubs.
“Having met him and spoken with him about our plans, he made his mind up quickly that Coventry City was the
club he wanted to join. I’m really looking forward to working with Rod. He is a quick, strong and aggressive centre half, who can also read the game well.
“He is still fairly young and has great potential but still has experience at this level, having won promotion at Northampton.
“We are looking to add further to the squad in the coming days.”
The gaffer was also delighted to bag Blades striker Marc McNulty to add to his earlier capture of former City favourite Michael Doyle.
“I think Marc (McNulty) and Michael (Doyle) have been two good bits of early business,” Robins said. “But it is only a start and there will be others joining them very soon.
“Obviously last year we were short on goals, and Marc can certainly help us improve on that.
“He is a really talented player, but somebody who has not played enough football recently for whatever reason.
“He has been at a big club in Sheffield United and now he joins another big club in Coventry City.”
Reports suggested McNulty, 24, was in high demand following his release from the Blades, with Mansfield Town and Bristol Rovers seemingly interested.
Robins added: “It has been an interesting process and great dealing with him while we were getting the deal over the line. I’m delighted to get it done because there was quite a bit of interest in him from higher and the same division. I want to try and build a squad that is capable of competing and that the supporters deserve to watch every week. The players I am trying to get can help us in the short, medium and long term.”
Michael Doyle returns to the club he made under 300 appearances for and Robins has been impressed with what he has seen so far. He added: “Doyle knows the club inside out, his enthusiasm never wavers and he is a big asset to us both on and off the field.”
