Plans for 15-metre mobile phone mast in Canley proposed

A 15-METRE tall mobile phone mast could be built in Canley.

Manchester firm Clarke Telecoms have pinpointed a site in Sir Henry Parkes Road close to the Aldi Supermarket.

The proposal is for a 15-metre black post supporting antennas to improve mobile reception in the area.

The company says the base station would provide 4G coverage for mobile phone company Telefonica which currently has very little 4G coverage in the area.

The base station would improve the company’s 2G and 3G coverage in the area as well as providing a future service for Vodafone to the university, they say.

Cllr David Skinner (Con Westwood) said: “I would welcome anything that improves mobile phone reception and communications generally in the area.”

A letter to Cllr Tim Mayer (Con, Westwood) from Clarke Telecoms said: “Mobiles can only work with a network of base stations in place where people want to use their mobile phones or other wireless devices.

“Without base stations mobile phones and the other devices we reply on simply won’t work.”

The company picked the spot because in other nearby places either there wasn’t good coverage, the landowner didn’t want a base station on the land or the land was earmarked for road improvements.

A site belonging to Warwick University in Kirby Corner Road was ruled out because the university didn’t want a base station.

Cannon Park Shopping Centre and the University of Warwick Science Park were ruled out for the same reason.

Bosses at Clarke Telecoms have told local councillors representing the ward about their plans. They are making a formal planning application to Coventry City Council this month.

2G technology, dating back to the 1990s, allows texts and digital phone calls from mobiles.

3G coverage allowed mobile phone users to download music and video, surf the internet and make video calls.

4G is the latest technological improvement allowing clearer phone calls and faster downloads.
