PROMOTION is the priority says new Coventry City signing Liam Kelly.

The 27-year-old midfielder knows all about League Two after spending last season with newly-relegated Leyton Orient, but while admitting that it will be difficult he says he has every faith in manager Mark Robins to lead the Sky Blues to success.

“A club of this size can’t have any other ambition than promotion,” said City’s fourth signing of the summer who has agreed a two year deal at the Ricoh Arena.

“Promotion should be the number one priority. I think if you look at the size of the club, the heritage of the club

– it doesn’t belong in this league. But it’s going to be a tough season, there are some tough places to go in League Two.”

He added: “I’m delighted to have agreed to sign for the club. It’s good to get this done so early in the off-season. It gives you a chance to get yourself focused for the start of pre-season and the upcoming season.

Robins’s reputation in the game was a factor in the Scotland international making the switch from Brisbane Road.

“I’ve played against the Gaffer’s teams before,” said the player who has been cap- tain at his previous two clubs, Orient and Oldham.

“They’ve always been tough teams to play against and they’ve always played good football. That is part of the attraction of coming here to Coventry.

“I’ve got every faith in the manager and the players who have come in so far. The belief is there that this team is more than capable of getting themselves back to League One and pushing on from there.”

Like fellow new recruit Marc McNulty, Kelly’s partner also has a baby due.

“There’s no holiday this season,” he revealed.

“My partner is due a baby any day now, so it will be a case of no sleep at night – and then get myself ready for preseason!”
