FAN POWER COULD HELP BRING BACK BOROUGH NAME

- By CHRIS PHILPOTT Nuneaton Reporter news@coventrytelegraph.net

NUNEATON’S biggest football club is considering reverting back to its old name.

Nuneaton Town has said it is listening to the fans and could change back to Nuneaton Borough. Fans are being urged to give their thoughts on the possible change.

It is a move the club are labelling ‘You have asked, we have listened’ and is one chairman Lee Thorn admitted was a real possibility. He said: “At the recent Supporters Co-op fans forum it became clear that moving back to Nuneaton Borough was some- thing a lot of the fans felt passionate about so we have listed to that and taken the first steps to making it happen.

“It is something that cannot happen overnight, the applications cannot be made until December, but it is something we are looking at making a reality.

“The fans have asked and we have listened.”

They certainly did just that as recent research by the Supporters Co-op showed that 85 per cent of 160 fans asked wanted the club to revert to being called Nuneaton Borough once again.

Only 23 per cent of fans polled preferred the Nuneaton Town name.

To make that change, though, the club need to poll a wider section of the fanbase and are urging supporters to get in touch with their own viewpoint.

A statement from the club read: “There have been recent examples of other clubs reverting back to established names and as such we have taken the first tentative steps by contacting The FA for guidance on the matter.

“A formal application is to be submitted later in the year that will be assessed in accordance with FA Rules.

“The FA ruling states that any application for a name change for the 2018/19 season would have to be lodged by December 31 2017. Transparency of a full and frank consultation with our entire fan base would also have to be proved on application.

“Therefore we are canvassing your opinion on this key decision and should there be a desire to change the name of the club, the wheels will be set in motion.

“For those supporters without internet access, copies of the form will be available from the main office.”

You can take part in the online survey by visiting www.nuneatontownfc.com.
