NUNEATON’S animal sanctuary is being deluged by calls for help every day. The staff at Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary are receiving between 40 and 50 calls a day for help. Geoff Grewcock, founder of the Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, said: “It is unbelievable how busy we are. “We are getting about 40 or 50 calls a day, we can’t keep up with them all some days.” Now, 16 years after the sanctuary was first founded, Geoff and his team have helped to care for 38,200 animals and this figure rises on a daily basis. As well as responding to calls from residents, Geoff also helps the police, fire and rescue and Network Rail with any animal related incidents. Geoff said that the animal haven is coping well – and that is largely down to kind donations from the community. In fact the generosity of folk, who have taken the sanctuary to their hearts, helped Geoff achieve his dream – of having a brand new hospital unit. The facility cost £12,000, a figure that was funded entirely by donations. It has been a mixed 12 months for Geoff because the delight of opening the hospital unit was tinged with sadness as they sadly lost one of the sanctuary’s most loved characters – Roxy the fox. There is a new wave of characters emerging from the sanctuary, though, including Sweep, the tea-loving fox. The one-year-old has become a hit on the internet as she is fond of a brew - in fact she has one every day! The sanctuary now plays home to eight foxes, the latest being Scooby, who is just a few months old. “He has settled in really well,” Geoff said. “I bring him in every night and he sleeps in a big cage in the kitchen, he’s a lovely little cub.” As always, donations are needed to keep the sanctuary open and, at the moment, is it in desperate need of bedding, towels, pillows and duvets. Anyone who would like to help should visit www.nuneatonwildlife.co.uk, visit its page on Facebook or drop the items at the sanctuary.
