Sport Wright not worried by tough month for Boro

NUNEATON Town boss Tommy Wright is chomping at the bit when it comes to the Vanarama National League fixtures this season.

Boro have been handed a tough opening month when the games were released with four of the first five games being played against teams who are expected to challenge for the play-offs.

For Wright that is just fine as he admitted the bigger the better to start the campaign.

He said: “The opening fixtures hold no fear for us, you have to play every team twice anyway. The first game, away at Harrogate, is one I am particularly looking forward to. I was only there for a short time as a player but I have a lot of affinity to the place.

“They have brought in some good players this summer, we know Ben O’Hanlon obviously, but they are a team everyone is expecting big things from.”

Boro follow up with a home match-up with Kidderminster on August 8 and a visit from Gainsborough Trinity on August 12.

They then face consecutive awayday journeys, first to Brackley on August 15 and then to York on August 19. For Wright it signals a tough month – on paper at least.

He added: “That is the thing, we don’t know what any of these teams are actually going to be like yet.

“We know the expectations around them, we know the signings they have made, but we don’t know how they are going to play yet.

“Take Kidderminster. They are being tipped to go up this year, but have lost a few players. They are a big club, though, and do like to get in their stride as the season goes on.

“Is playing them the second game bad or is it a bonus? You just don’t know at this stage.

“It does look hard, playing some of those types of team so early in the season, but I am confident.

“We have got a good squad here this year and have added players that I think will do well for us.”

Those players will face the usual Christmas double header against near-neighbours Tamworth, matches that Wright believes could go either way.

He said: “The games against Tamworth are ones we had last year at Christmas and we did well.

“If we could do the same this year that would be great. Christmas is a time when the games come thick and fast so points around that time are key.

“That’s a lot way off yet, though, we have the pre-season to get through first before we even start the league campaign. With the fixtures out now, though, at least we can start planning for that.”
