STRAWB■ POLL
With Wimbledon in full swing, it’s the perfect time for some strawberries. We put the supermarkets’ offerings to the test
DRISCOLL’S BRITISH STRAWBERRIES (300g), £1.99, LIDL
Some were bruised and an irregular shape with a gritty texture. While surprisingly sweet, they were the smallest pack and expensive for a discounter.
VERDICT: We expected better 5/10
NATURE’S PICK BRITISH STRAWBERRIES (400g), £1.29, ALDI
Scarlet and a good size, they tasted fresh and juicy with an irresistible burst of sweetness, so they were gone in a flash – and not one dud in the carton. VERDICT: Topnotch at a bargain price 10/10
MARKET ST STRAWBERRIES (400g), £2, MORRISONS
Looked ripe and tempting with a mix of sizes from small to large. But they were watery and tasted of nothing, not even a hint of fruity flavour. VERDICT: Very bland 3/10
BRITISH STRAWBERRIES (400g), ON OFFER AT £1.50, SAINSBURY’S
Good, even size and colour. Juicy and strong flavour. Lasted three days. VERDICT: Decent quality 8/10
BRITISH STRAWBERRIES (400g), OFFER AT £2, M&S
Very appealing, bright and summery red. Packed with flavour, nice and juicy, firm with a lovely crunch. VERDICT: As a strawberry should be 9.5/10
BRITISH STRAWBERRIES (300g), £1.29, ASDA
Little flavour and slightly bitter aftertaste. Didn’t last well. Went to mush. VERDICT: Disappointing 3/10
BRITISH STRAWBERRIES (400g), £2, TESCO
Lots of sizes, tiny to large, and a mixed bag taste-wise too – from perfectly sweet to sour, watery and nondescript. VERDICT: A lucky dip 6/10
LOVED BY US BRITISH STRAWBERRIES (400g), £2, CO-OP
A good-looking rouge and larger than average, most were ripe and luscious – but a few spoiled the joy with sour notes. VERDICT: Pipped at the post 8/10
