Running to raise funds

- By CLAIRE HARRISON Nuneaton Reporter

A ‘RUN for home’ will be made by an intrepid squad of fundraisers as they aim to make their way back to Nuneaton after being abandoned at an undisclosed location.

The team, made up of 15 regulars and members of the football team at The Parade, will be dropped off at an unknown location tomorrow and they have to get back to the pub but there is one catch – they will have no money or phones.

Undertaking the challenge is the brainchild of landlady Carol Martin as part of her commitment to raising funds for the Lee Rigby Foundation. “It was my idea, I have these mad ideas sometimes and I asked if anyone wanted to take part and a lot of the football lads said they would do it,” she explained.

The team will be picked up 8.30am and dropped off at the unknown location at around 9.45am, with the challenge of getting back home to The Parade.

On their return, they will be given a hero’s welcome during a charity evening, which will include a charity auction, raffle and disco.

All of the funds raised on the night will also be given to the good cause, which is especially close to the club’s heart.

“The Nuneaton and Bedworth Fusiliers meet at The Parade, Lee Rigby was a Fusilier, and we just wanted to get involved,” said Carol .

In fact, Carol has spent the past few days at the house and lodge, volunteering her time to ensure that it will be opened in September to support bereaved families.

Lyn Rigby, Lee’s mum and his step-dad Ian will be attending the fundraising evening: “They will be coming down in the morning, spending the day with us and then coming to the event at night,” Carol added.

Anyone is welcome to pop along to the event, which will start at 7pm.
