Alex: I won’t change after Posh switch

ALEX Penny is determined to keep his feet on the ground after sealing a record transfer last week.

The 20-year-old swapped Nuneaton Town for Peterborough United on Wednesday, smashing the record fee the Boro had received in the process.

The youngster is adamant that despite the jump up from the Vanarama National League North to League One, he would continue to keep himself grounded.

“I just want to keep working like I have been,” he said. “I have got the move but that doesn’t mean I need to change. I will have to work harder in order to make up the jump in quality but I am not going there to let it get to me.

“I am going there to play football and learn about my game. The gaffer there (Grant McCann) has already shown a lot of belief in me with what he has said in interviews.

“To hear that is great, it is down to me now to show that it is all warranted.”

Penny had gained a lot of attention during his time at the Boro with a spell on trial at West Bromwich Albion leading to the Premier League Club expressing an interest in taking him there full-time.

It is the Posh, though, who have made the move and it is one that Penny said he was ‘buzzing’ with.

He added: “There is a lot of emotions and thoughts running through my head, but buzzing is one word I could use.

“I am so pleased to get into the Football League and that is something I have to thank Nuneaton manager Tommy Wright for.

“He showed the belief in me to pick me last season and the work at Nuneaton helped me kick on my game. I was fulltime there and everything was geared towards making you a better player.

“I will hope to continue that at Peterborough, they have a history of taking players from non-league and helping them develop. Callum Chettle is proof of that.

“I just hope I can add to that list.”
