EARLY worms queued to bag themselves some bargains at the opening of a new supermarket in Nuneaton this morning.

Aldi opened its second Nuneaton store on Weddington Road today and customers were eagerly awaiting their chance to get a first look at the store.

The first 100 shoppers through the door were given a golden ticket, which earned them a premium raffle prize when they got to the till.

Shoppers were picking up their normal weekly groceries and also grabbing items from the notorious special buys aisle, including compressors, sewing machines and croquet sets.

Josephine Allen was in the queue at 7.15am and had the second golden ticket.

She picked up a dashcam for a Christmas present and a new phone for herself.

She said: “I was surprised there were only two, it’s something I have never done before but I was up anyway and thought I’d have a little walk around.

“It’s a lovely store, it’s just finding everywhere but I’ll get used to it. ”

The newly built store is one of 60 that the company is hoping to open in 2017.

There are already two others nearby, one in Stockingford and another on the A5 in Hinckley, on the edge of Nuneaton.

The Weddington Road store has 100 car parking spaces and has created 36 full and part-time jobs.

Ian Taylor, who lives in Weddington bagged himself the final golden ticket at the opening and was thrilled. He said: “We got here at ten to eight and there was a big crowd so we just waited until the call came in and I got the last ticket! I am very pleased and I do believe you get a prize.

“I have never been to a shop opening, even at the age of 82 it’s a good experience for me, it’s a lovely clean place.”
