Anger over crossing delay

TOO many roadworks around a Nuneaton community have led to the delay of a crossing being installed outside a new supermarket.

When the new Aldi store opened its doors in Weddington Road, many residents had expected a new puffin crossing to be in place too.

But it has yet to appear, sparking anger among householders along the main road.

“The Weddington Road is near impossible to cross for the elderly or anyone with small children, it is a death trap and an accident waiting to happen,” said a resident, who did not want to be named.

The householder claimed that Warwickshire County Council, as highways agency, told Aldi that it would put the safety measure in place but could not do so until September.

“Why isn’t the crossing being installed until September, even though it was part of planning consent that a crossing must be installed in conjunction with the store opening?” she fumed.

A spokesperson for Shire Hall said the delay was in part down to the sheer number of road traffic works in the area, including the closure of a large section of Weddington Road.

“It was felt that it would be too disruptive to traffic in the area to have a further set of roadworks outside the Aldi store at the same time. Therefore the decision was taken, with the full agreement of Aldi, that the work to install the crossing is delayed.
