THE date has been unveiled for the opening of Coventry’s first Slug & Lettuce pub.

The pub chain says the venue will open in the former Establishment Bar & Grill, in Bayley Lane, on Thursday, August 24.

The Grade II listed building dates back to the late 18th century when it served as a courthouse. There were even hangings nearby.

Some of the original features are still there including the entrance to the court cells and the judge’s chair.

Trish Willetts, Coventry Business Improvement District manager, said: “The Slug and Lettuce will be a welcome addition to Coventry and we’re thrilled that it will be arriving very soon.

“The business is a trusted and recognised brand and I’m sure it will be a hit with shoppers and visitors.

Ghost hunt at The Establishment

“The Slug and Lettuce is just one of many exciting businesses that will be arriving in the city centre over the next few years

“Work on the other half of Cathedral Lanes Shopping Centre is confirmed to begin in the near future, bringing even more big name restaurants and the City Centre South development will help usher in a new era for Coventry.”

The first Slug and Lettuce opened in Islington in North London in the mid 1980s. The area was just starting to become a fashionable place to live.

The pub was founded as part of a small chain of pubs, all with different names, by businessman Hugh Corbett. The chain has grown and changed hands several times since then with the Slug and Lettuce name chosen for all.

Over the years bosses have targeted groups of women on nights out as well as aiming for a continental bar feel.

The chain is now owned by the Luton-based Stonegate Pubs Company. There are 80 across the UK.

The only other Slug & Lettuce pubs near Coventry are at the Touchwood Shopping Centre in Solihull and at Brindley Place in Birmingham.

At the moment there is a two-for-one offer on cocktails every day with other offers spread around the week.

There is champagne, prosecco, beer, cider, fizz bowls and alcoholic coffee as well as a selection of white, red and rose wines. This Coventry chip shop has been named one of the best in Britain

For non-drinkers who don’t want to miss out on the fun there is a choice of alcohol free mocktails.

A wide range of burgers and traditional British treats such as beef and double Gloucester pie appear on the menu beside dishes from overseas such as Korean Bibimap and Italian lasagne.

For weekday lunches there are treats such as chicken ramen and burritos from the fast and fresh menu.

For those watching the calories they eat there is a skinny menu with goodies such as tacos with roasted vegetables and marinated chicken with pepper skewers.

Porridge and sausage sandwiches appear on the brunch menu. Children can choose two courses for £4.95 and their menu comes with puzzles and drawing to keep them busy while the food is made.

There’s a pick and mix menu, also £4.95, to make sure all tastes are catered for.

Full size mains go from £7.89 to £10 with delicacies such as steak, sea food mixed grill and salmon a little more.

Small portions are under £5 with sandwiches up to £8. Puddings start at £2.99 for vanilla ice cream up to £9.99 for a shared bowl of goodies.
