‘On your bike’ solution won’t work nowadays
“HE got on his bike.” Remembering his father, this was Norman Tebbit’s answer to unemployment.
But times have changed. While automation banishes soulless drudgery, it cannot but generate unemployment as well.
Yet remuneration at the top was never higher. Down below, government offers the unemployed and their families minimal ‘benefits’.
To counter widespread penury, one idea is to pay everyone a living wage, ignoring additional earnings.
Some would also favour a flat tax. Above a certain exemption, the same percentage would apply across the board and cut administration. So far, our leaders feign interest and turn away. Dennis Coulson Kenilworth
Surprise result of arthritis tonic
IN response to the photo and caption in your paper (July 29) about the athritis treatment concerning Margaret Hills. I was at the time virtually housebound with spondylosis of the spine, so, in desperation, I tried and tested this treatment. I bought all the ingredients including the charcoal tablets (yuck) and stuck to this treatment rigorously and lost weight (not intentional). Unfortunately it made no difference to my problem but certainly helped with the sore throats I often had. The cider vinegar and honey, which I took twice a day (and was very nice), worked extremely well and I don’t remember having a sore throat since. Susan Mills Coventry
Gnorman and Gnorma, the Garden Gnomes
Gnorman and Gnorma were two
happy gnomes, Who with their friends could go into
people’s homes, They were for sale at Asda stores, And were all grouped together as
you walked through the doors. Designed to go in your garden for
colour and fun, Your best friends through rain and
sun. The choice of gnomes was amazing, And they were used to customers
gazing, Deciding if they wanted to buy one
or two, The decision was difficult as to what
to do. They were adorable little people to
put in your shopping trolley, And really did not cost an awful lot
of lolly. They came in all shapes and sizes, Different costumes and guises, First the senior ones, teenagers,
young children and a tiny tot, Even a bride gnome wanting to tie
the knot. Professional ones such as a doctor
or policeman, You really could become a huge fan. Gnorman and Gnorma ideally liked
to be bought as a pair, To be kept together made it really
fair. You could also buy a cat or dog as
their pet, Who were economical as they never
needed the vet! So let’s start buying these dear little
souls, They are loveable and have
important roles, As they add such charm to your
gardens and lawns, And are loyal and happy with each
new day as it dawns. Linda Hill Rugby
