There are plenty of places to visit with a link to the big screen... and the small screen too

WITH their cobbled streets, rolling hills and Tudor mansions, plenty of places in the care of the National Trust have provided the backdrops to countless films and TV shows.

Harvey Edgington, head of filming and locations at the National Trust, says: “TV productions are a very good way of getting people interested in a property and the increase in visitors is great news for these historic places as the additional revenue will help secure their future for generations to come.”

So why not include a National Trust property on one of your family days out this summer?

Here are just a few which might grab your children’s interest via their Hollywood connections...

Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire and its neighbouring village were backdrops for more than one

Harry Potter movie. The Abbey was used for several Hogwarts interior scenes in the earlier movies, including the classrooms of Professors Snape and Quirrell. The cloisters made some of Hogwart’s corridors.

This year’s blockbuster movie King Arthur: Legend of the

Sword starring Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law and David Beckham, was largely filmed in Snowdonia, Wales. Scenes took place along the shores of Llyn Gwynant and besides one of Snowdonia’s most imposing peaks; Tryfan.

Ham House and Garden in Richmond-upon-Thames took a starring role in Disney’s actionpacked blockbuster John Carter (2012). It doubled up as a New York mansion on the Hudson River.

Cliveden, in Somerset, and its gardens take a starring role in Disney’s 2015 film Cinderella.

Frensham Ponds in Surrey took centre stage in the film Snow

White and the Huntsman which starred Charlize Theron as the evil queen, Chris ‘Thor’ Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Kristen Stewart as Snow White.

In Maleficent (2014), starring Angelina Jolie, the ancient beech and oak woodland of Ashridge Forest appears as the Enchanted Forest, home to Angelina’s vengeful fairy. Find more film and television locations at nationaltrust.org.uk
