Man hands himself in to police after pensioner died in M42 smash

A MAN has handed himself in after a Coventry pensioner died in a collision on the M42.

The 36-year-old went to a police station in Birmingham where he was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

It followed a crash on the M42 near Tamworth Services at 8.50pm on Saturday in which an 83-yearold man in a gold Vauxhall Agila was killed. A 74-year-old woman who was in the same car remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Police said the other car involved was a Peugeot 307.

A spokesman for Warwickshi­re Police said: “A 36-year-old man from Birmingham has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a collision on the M42 on Saturday night. The man presented himself to a police station in Birmingham following a police appeal.

“An 83-year-old man from Coventry was declared dead at the scene of the collision which occurred at 8.50pm on the northbound carriagewa­y between junctions 10 and 11. A 74-year-old woman was taken to hospital where she is in a serious but stable condition. A Peugeot 307 was in collision with a gold Vauxhall Agila which contained the deceased and the injured.”

Det Insp Tim Sharp said: “We are continuing to investigat­e the cause of the collision and we’re keen to speak to anyone who witnessed it or has any other informatio­n that could help with our enquiries. We would also like to speak to anyone who saw either of the vehicles prior to the collision.”
