SHOPPING CENTRE CLOSED AFTER RAID AT JEWELLERS

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter news@trinitymirror.com

A GANG is believed to be responsible for raiding a jewellery shop which forced the closure of a Nuneaton shopping centre.

While the Abbeygate Shopping Centre remained shut yesterday, it was revealed that three suspects got into the shopping centre through the roof, showering glass everywhere.

They then forced their way into Daniel’s Jewellers and smashed their way into a number of cabinets containing jewellery.

A Warwickshire Police Force spokeswoman said: “A quantity of jewellery was removed from the premises, which is currently closed.

“Enquiries are currently ongoing and officers would like anyone who was in the area or who witnessed people acting suspiciously at the time to come forward.”

The shopping centre, which was built in the 1960s, still remained closed yesterday following the break-in.

Shoppers were greeted by signs on the shutters of the entrances into the shopping centre saying it was closed.

The centre has not been open since early yesterday when the alarm was first raised with the police at 7.45am to report the break-in at the well-known familyrun jewellers.

Its closure will have impacted on all of the traders within the large building.

The centre has been contacted but at the time of publication, no-one was available for comment.

In the meantime, investigating officers are keen to hear from anyone who sported anything suspicious in the area, especially between 1.30am and 2.30am today.

Those with information should call Warwickshire Police on 101, quoting incident number of 47 of August 21.

Details can also be passed on to police via the Crimestoppers hotline, which is free and confidential, on 0800 555 111.
