COVENTRY City have signed defender Tom Davies on a two year deal from Portsmouth, bringing to 13 the number of incomings at the Ricoh this summer.

The 25-year-old central defender started his career in the youth set-ups of Manchester United and Blackburn, before spells at clubs including FC United of Manchester, Fleetwood Town and Accrington Stanley, prior to joining Pompey in 2016.

Manager Mark Robins said: “I am very pleased to complete this transfer and to be able to add another quality signing during a busy transfer window, and I’m grateful for the additional support from the club to do this.

“Tom is an aggressive and strong centre-half, both of which are key attributes in this league, and we look forward to welcoming him to the squad.”

Davies joined the Blues from Accrington last summer and made a total of 16 first team appearances during his time on the south coast.

He featured only once this term, however, partnering Jack Whatmough in defence for the Checkatrade Trophy draw with Fulham under-21s.

Meanwhile, former Coventry City captain Carl Baker has left Portsmouth by mutual consent.

Baker has been linked with a move to India, but the ex-Sky Blues skipper is understood to be keen to return to the Ricoh Arena to be closer to home and hook back up with former boss Robins, who handed him the armband during his first spell in charge in 2012.

Baker scored 28 goals in 182 appearances first time around at the Sky Blues, and has exited the League One club with another year left on his contract at Fratton Park.

The 34-year-old netted nine times in 50 appearances during his time on the south coast.

The midfielder still lives locally to Coventry and has spent the last 12 months car sharing with another former City skipper, Michael Doyle, who earlier this summer agreed to return to the club, becoming Robins’ first signing.

City can still get their man despite the deadline having passed because Baker is now a free agent.

With the transfer window shut, Robins will now turn his attention to Chesterfield on Saturday when the Sky Blues resume their League Two campaign looking to end a run of three consecutive defeats.
