Improving the environment, or not

- Frank Harrison Coundon

Improving the environment, is

what our council is about. At least, that’s the message they

are putting out We are having new bin collections

and had a leaflet telling us so. It lists what, into the bin, can and

cannot go. There on, an image of an iron with

a red cross through, Was one thing, that to which my

attention, it drew. They are providing information

centres around the town, To help those people for whom the

leaflet caused a frown. My question to the lady was, when

my iron fails, How will I dispose of it? What it

entails. Take it to the tip, she said, with a

smile on her face. To reiterate, I said, go in my car to

the tip, is that the case? She said, that’s right sir, they have

a special place, For small electric items that your

life no longer grace. Consumer information, when retail

outlets speak, Suggests that thousands of small

appliances are sold every week, And many of these are sold to

replace, Equipment that no longer stands

the pace. So now I have a vision of what I

think is a farce, Of lots of extra journeys being

taken in our cars. Polluting the very air the council

profess to improve, And even worse, with engines running, when so many cannot move, And when the London Road is

continually congested, To help the situation, road

improvements will be suggested, And the money we have saved for

our recycling pot, Will then be spent on a road scheme to improve the environments lot.
