A MAN who was filling up his motherin-law’s car with fuel ending up helping to deliver a baby on a petrol station forecourt.

Keith McGurk, 53, was about to leave the BP garage on Ansty Road when a man ran towards him shellshocked that his partner had gone into labour in their car.

The drama happened at 11.30am on Sunday morning.

Keith said: “I took my mother-in-law’s car to fill up with petrol and as I was getting in my car, I saw a man who looked distressed.

“He ran towards my car and in broken English, he asked me to take his phone because his wife was in labour and the ambulance service was on the phone.

“His wife was giving birth so he gave me the phone.

“He was a bit shell-shocked but seemed to be doing everything right and already had some towels.

“By the time we got back to his car, the baby had come out.”

Although Keith translated between the new dad and paramedics, he insisted his help was modest. He said: “I didn’t really do anything. I was there to just translate and flag down the ambulance. “He seemed startled but handled it well. “It all happened so fast, but he thanked me before they both went off to hospital. “I definitely won’t forget it in a while.” A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We can confirm that it was called to the junction of Hipswell Highway and Ansty Road, Coventry, shortly after 11.30am on Sunday to reports of a woman in labour in a car. “Whilst two ambulances were en route, an ambulance 999 call assessor stayed on the line to provide labour advice to the woman and her husband. The baby was born just a few minutes into the 999 call and, when the first ambulance crew arrived, they found a healthy baby boy and two happy parents. “After further assessment and treatment on scene by the ambulance crews, the new-born and mother were taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further checks.”
