- By BEN ECCLESTON Chief Reporter news@trinitymirror.com

THE man arrested after Monday’s dramatic hammer attack in Ball Hill was the VICTIM, police have confirmed.

Qwame Leroy was chased by three men and attacked with the weapons in front of horrified drivers and passersby in Walsgrave Road.

The gang then smashed the rear windscreen and passenger window of his silver Chevrolet before speeding off in their own car.

However, Leroy himself was arrested and has now been charged with driving while disqualified and using a motor vehicle without insurance.

Leroy, 40, from Stoke Aldermoor, will appear at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on October 19.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police also confirmed they are still searching for his attackers and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

One person who has already spoken to police is Jan O’Hara who was caught up in the very centre of the drama which unfolded at around 8.15am on Monday.

The father was stuck in the rush-hour queues in Walsgrave Road when Leroy’s Chevrolet crashed in to the back of his car.

Jan said: “I jumped out of my car and so did [the other driver]. I noticed a car behind that one and three lads jumped out of that one as well.

“They smashed his car up and hit him as well, before he ran down the road where they were all beating him up.”

Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
