Chambers could be man in demand

- By CHRIS PHILPOTTS covsport@trinitymirror.com Ashley Chambers

AFTER netting six goals in his last two games Nuneaton frontman Ashley Chambers could be seen as a man in demand this winter – not that Boro boss Tommy Wright will let him go lightly.

Chambers grabbed all three goals as Nuneaton beat Kings Lynn in the FA Cup and then repeated the feat as they defeated Southport in the league last weekend, his first and second professional hat-tricks.

The goal glut has led some to question if the former Grimsby man will still be a Boro player come the New Year transfer window.

“Ashley is a Football League player,” said Wright. “He belongs in the Football League.

“It really was an incredible deal for us to get him. He is that good. For him to be at Nuneaton says a lot about the club.

“To be fair I think personal circumstance played a part. He wanted to be local and he wanted to play full-time. But it was still a coup to get a player like that on a two-year deal – and we will want to keep him.”

Not that potential suitors will be put off by the stance if Chambers continues to find the back of the net like he has done of late.

“I will have to change my phone number,” Wright joked. “I do think a lot of managers have missed a trick with him, though.

“I think he was played a lot as a winger when he was younger and to me he is a centre forward and showing that with how he is playing of late.

“I think people are seeing that now and will be interested in him of course. But I have a great relationship with Ash, as does the chairman here, and I can tell you that we will be fighting our hardest to keep him at this football club as he is a special talent.”
