WHY NEW STUDENT ACCOMMODATION IN COVENTRY CITY CENTRE IS A SELL-OUT

THIS is what it looks like inside the newest addition to Coventry’s ever-changing skyline.

The 391-bed Millennium View student complex opposite Coventry Transport Museum opened to freshers last week.

The building, which comprises three distinct sections with room for shops on the ground floor, is operated by Unite Students, which runs student accommodation sites across the UK.

The firm, which runs three other sites in Coventry – Gosford Gate, Raglan House and Callice Court – granted the Telegraph an exclusive tour.

Facilities in Millennium View include a games room, fortnightly cleaning of communal areas, laundry facilities and snack machines.

The development has proved so popular that all studio rooms – individual flats with a private kitchen and bathroom – have sold out.

Unite says: “Millennium View is located in the city centre of Coventry, perfect for those who love the hustle and bustle of city life.

“There is plenty going on around the property, including shops, bars, restaurants, parks and museum – you’ll find everything a student could ever want.”

“Plus, it is only around a five to ten-minute walk to the majority of Coventry University buildings.”

Construction on the building started last spring.

The site is council-owned and forms the last remaining part of the Phoenix Initiative - Coventry’s Millennium project that saw the development of Millennium Place, Priory Place and the Transport Museum, as well as the uncovering of the Priory Ruins.

Several previous attempts to secure a landmark development to complete the Millennium Place frontage have faltered, with the site remaining empty for over a decade.

The developers also agreed to contribute £280,000 towards the regeneration of the wider Burges area which has received £2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

That project is being managed by Coventry City Council in partnership with Historic Coventry Trust.

Speaking last year, Ian Harrabin, managing director of developer Complex Development Projects (CDP), said: “The development of this leftover site is the key to the successful regeneration of The Burges area and the creation of activity in the proposed riverside square. The Burges area has been in decline for decades but deserves to be much better cared for.

“It is one of the few intact parts of the pre-war city that we have left and has a lot of potential to create an attractive riverside quarter. This planning decision will help enable that to happen.

“The success of our universities and the growth in student housing demand has allowed us to bring forward a development which had previously stalled for economic reasons and that will have a very positive knock-on effect for the city.”
