McNulty is going to be goal-den at Sky Blues, says Doyle

MICHAEL Doyle insists Coventry City striker Marc McNulty is the best finisher at the club and will get his goal-scoring season up and running sooner rather than later.

The Sky Blues skipper knows more than most about the 25-year-old’s qualities from first-hand experience after being team-mates with him at both Sheffield United and Portsmouth, and he’s confident he’ll win over the fans.

McNulty has suffered injury setbacks since joining City in the summer, his latest a hamstring strain that he’s only just fully come back from in the last two games, adding to the frustration of his stop-start campaign.

During his time out, of course, Duckens Nazon has come to the fore as leading scorer and established himself as a firm fans’ favourite, while Jordan Ponticelli continues to be the supporters’ golden boy whom they’re desperate to see get more game time.

“Marc has everything to be a top striker at this level and you look at the last few home games and the opportunities we have been creating, it must be frustrating for him not to have been involved,” said Doyle, of the player who has scored three goals so far this season, two penalties in cup competitions and one from open play in the league.

“People can see the qualities he’s got and he just needs an opportunity.

“Even on Saturday he made a run and Liam Kelly could have put him through and he has decided to take a shot, so he just needs that little bit of a break. “But listen, there’s no doubt about it he’s a quality player and he’s going to get his chances and he’s going to score. “I personally don’t think there’s a better finisher at the club and with everything else that he gives with his movement and the fact that he is so clever, it must be very frustrating for him at the minute.

“But it’s a long season. I know people are crying out for some players and sometimes football can be a bit fickle, but he’ll earn his stripes.

“He’s done it at every football club he’s played at and I have no doubts about it that he will get going here and be great for us.” COVENTRY City’s league leading Under-23s slipped to a 1-0 defeat in a top of the table clash at QPR.

The Sky Blues went behind just after the half-hour mark against second-placed Rangers when goalkeeper Corey Addai failed to hold a cross into the box, allowing Olamide Shodipo to pounce on the loose ball at Loftus Road.

The narrow defeat means City slip to second place in the Professional Development League South, swapping places with the Hoops who go top.
