COUNCIL: LET’S BACK COV’S CITY OF CULTURE BID
TOWN HALL CHIEFS SAY VICTORY WOULD ALSO BE HUGE BOOST FOR THE BOROUGH
TOWN Hall chiefs have thrown their weight behind neighbouring Coventry’s bid to be crowned UK City of Culture – and want residents to do the same.
It has emerged that Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has offered its support to the campaign to see Coventry become UK City of Culture 2021.
The borough is on the border of the city, with Bedworth almost acting as a gateway, and council bosses are hoping that, if Coventry is successful, the two towns council benefit.
Councillor Julie Jackson, deputy leader at the council, said: “We really have our fingers crossed for Coventry’s bid; the business and residential links between our two communities have always been very strong, with many of our residents working in Coventry and vice versa.
“Of course, this bid isn’t just about the Arts; the UK City of Culture status will strengthen the local community and also bring about many opportunities for regeneration. The benefits will extend far beyond the city, right out to neighbouring authorities such as ours.
“As Coventry’s immediate urban neighbour, Nuneaton and Bedworth has much to gain if the City wins the race to be the UK Culture capital.
“I would urge everyone in the borough to show their support; businesses and residents can help get the message out there on social media too, please follow @Coventry2021.”
She went on to add:“This is a really exciting time for us all in the West Midlands. With Birmingham’s bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games being officially backed by the government, the West Midlands is certainly getting some well-deserved attention on the national and international stage. This can only be excellent news for all of us here in the region.”
There have been five cities shortlisted for the title, including Coventry, and the winner of UK City of Culture 2021 will be announced in December.
