Plea to help Foodbank

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter news@trinitymirror.com

DONATIONS are desperately needed to ensure that families on the breadline from across Nuneaton have food on their tables this Christmas.

Once again Nuneaton Foodbank has joined forces with the Salvation Army, children’s centres and children’s services in the town for a festive operation to ensure that those who have the least have something to smile about on Christmas Day.

Foodbank volunteers make-up food parcels which are given out to those in need, along with gifts for children donated via the Salvation Army’s annual toy appeal.

According to David Stanier, spokesperson for the Nuneaton Foodbank, they desperately need some festive foods for the parcels.

“We would be very grateful for tinned hams, slabs of iced Christmas cake, selection packs for children and festive biscuits,” he explained.

“We are collecting Christmas seasonal Items in order to begin making up food parcels as part of the work that we undertake over the Christmas. As always, any donations at all are very warmly welcomed, but these items are particularly needed.”

But it is not just the festive season that the Foodbank needs donations, sadly people need help to eat all-yearround.

Latest figures from the local branch of the Trussell Trust show that, at the end of October they distributed 0.25 of a tonne more than was donated.

Regular donations from schools, churches and organisations are gratefully received but the Foodbank is gearing up for one of its ‘most invaluable’ events if the year.

On Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2, Nuneaton and Bedworth Foodbank volunteers will be at Bedworth’s Tesco store for a nationwide food collection weekend.

“In the Christmas collection in 2016, 1827.7kgs was donated to the Nuneaton and Bedworth Foodbanks which was invaluable in helping us meet the increasing need locally,” Mr Stanier said.

“We would really welcome some ‘one off’ help from people who aren’t volunteers on a regular basis, to support our core team of volunteers.”

Helping hands are also needed on Tuesday, December 5 for loading and unloading the donated items at the foodbank’s warehouses in Nuneaton and Bedworth. Anyone who could volunteer for the collection should email nfbcollections@gmail.com

Those who have any items to donate for the festive food parcels should either Yorkshire Bank in Nuneaton, Sainsbury’s in Nuneaton and Nuffield Health in Nuneaton.
