Vera Lynn opened the best ever city exhibition

-

RE: Vera Lynn (Nov 14) – just to say that my husband and I attended this event. I can say that this night stands out in my memory as one of the very best exhibitions I have ever been fortunate to see in Coventry and wondered why we couldn’t have more of these sort of events as all others seem so insignificant in comparison. Laser lights beamed features all round the buildings giving us the story of the war years. And I remember seeing Vera Lynn going round the city centre waving and chatting to the crowds that gathered there. I thought at the time that this could replace firework night which would be much safer and more interesting for everybody but then I expect that it would be too costly to do on a regular basis. The other thing that pleased me was the Coventry Market Musical, which was a delight to see. Pity we can’t have more of this – especially with Coventry’s hopes of becoming the next UK City of Culture. Even this little theatre is no more, which was a great attraction. Oh well. I live in hope. Why I will miss being European

SO, ‘History will prove that we’re right to leave the EU’ according to Paul Hillock (Nov 13). That is highly unlikely, history proves very little. Whether or not the figures and statements that are then quoted are true or not is debateable, I’m sure that a wellinformed Remain voter would be able to come up with a set of figures that ‘prove’ completely the opposite. In the same way that he claims that a large number of Remain voters have changed their minds, the Remain camp believes the opposite.

What is being missed here is that it is not just about the economy or the future of this country as an autonomous nation. When we joined the Common Market, a lot of us felt that we were now part of a larger, better society; we felt European. A large number of people in the UK embraced the feeling of being part of Europe, of being part of a community and even a state that could stand alongside – and if necessary, oppose – the likes of the US and the Soviet Union. What I have enjoyed about being a member of the European Union is the ease with which we have been able to travel and do business throughout the continent, the opportunities to work with people from other cultures, the ability to employ people or be employed by people outside of this island.

Mr Hillock quite rightly points out that people with the relevant skills will still be able to work here if we do eventually leave. What he seems to forget is that a lot of them will chose not to if they do not see a future for their less skilled relatives. People who leave their own country to try to improve their standard of living are not just individuals, the are part of a family, part of a community.

I will miss being European and will fight to the last in the hope that the politicians will eventually do the right thing for our country. Joe Reynolds Styvechale
