If my organs can help others, help yourself

-

I STRUGGLE to believe that anyone could be so selfish as M T Hancock (Nov 25) with regards to the bill on organ donation supported by MP Geoffrey Robinson. Far from being evil, this is one of those bills that should have been passed in the last century; it should be compared to legislation such as the Race Discrimination Act, most people already hold the values but a few need coercing. Judging by his letters, Mr Hancock is in the same age group as I am, over 65, and therefore, like me, has enjoyed a life with free healthcare courtesy of our NHS. When I look back at the care I have received over my lifetime I often wonder if I have paid enough in to cover what I have taken out. I have never required ‘spare part’ surgery but, if I had, I would have grabbed the opportunity with both hands. What I do know is that if my body can help someone else to enjoy a better or longer life, then I can see no excuse for me to refuse. Like mine, Mr Hancock’s body is probably well past its ‘best before’ date and is unlikely to be required but if he is so selfish as to want his body preserved intact for his family then he should take the necessary action to preserve it, not assume it as a right. I have been lucky enough to enjoy a reasonably long and certainly fulfilling life, a life that on a couple of occasions has been saved by our health system. If my corpse can help someone else to enjoy what I have, then before I become a main meal for earthworms please help yourself. And Geoffrey Robinson, good luck and thank you. Joe Reynolds Styvechale

Relying on decent folk to foot the bill

OH how I agree with Mr Prewett (Nov 23) wanting to get rid of this present council. Coventry will not do any good with this bunch.

I also agree with reducing the number of councillors. What do they actually do? If you do not do a good job then expect to be called into the office and be sacked.

I hear it all the time when out shopping, people stating they are not happy with the workings of the council. The only democratic way is to vote them out, show them they are not fit for purpose.

It is a pity councils are not subjected to inspections like schools have Ofsted. I wonder how they would rate in an inspection?

We seem to be in a mess from Parliament right down to local councils. Where is our money going? Councils playing the blame game for austerity from government.

It seems the root of all evil is money. Politicians in Parliament being given too much for doing not a lot, as with councils wild spending on fruitless projects.

Then to try and increase council tax – who for? As our services have been reduced.

As Mr Prewett says, he does not mind paying his way and I also agree but to pay for those who don’t pay, can’t pay and won’t pay, I am sorry but do not agree to that.

Council, try and recover the eight million you are owed – do not just rely on the decent folk who pay up.

The EU empire will eventually fall apart

WELL said, Roy Frost (Nov 27) – an excellent letter!

The EU is trying to become an empire, and like all empires it will eventually fall apart.

When it does, the mess will be much worse than what we’re going through now, so, as Mr Frost rightly says, the quicker we’re out, the better.

If Remainers really do believe that the UK will be doomed, why don’t they relocate to any of the other 27 EU countries while there’s still time? N Blackford Coundon

Black Friday should be Super Saturday

THE idea of Black Friday could be better if you called it by a better name.

To have it on a working day is a mistake, because many millions of people are at work. Super Saturday would be a better slogan. Ian Harris Radford
