MORE than five inches of snow hit Coventry and Warwickshire yesterday, leaving the whole region virtually gridlocked.

The white stuff arrived in the early hours of the morning around 3am, and it carried on throughout the day, blanketing the city. Up to five inches of snow fell before 9.30am - with the snow building up on roads.

It caused travel chaos, with the M40 and A46 closed before 9am due to collisions.

Bus services across Coventry were also suspended for most of the day.

National Express tweeted through the early parts of the morning of only some routes being served, but shortly after confirmed a full suspension across the network.

Police across Coventry and the Midlands were warning people to not go out unless they really have to.

Those hoping to get out and about to the local events to make them feel festive were also cancelled.

The Stratford Victorian Market was cancelled on its last day due to the severity of the snow.

The Myton Hospices Santa Dash was also cancelled due to treacherous conditions and an unsafe route.

However Leamington’s market ploughed through and carried on as usual.

One of the country’s most popular attractions also closed.

Warwick Castle was shut following morning inspections of the site.

Cars were also being abandoned on the A444 from Nuneaton to Coventry and the snow made travelling on the roads nearly impossible.

The road was gridlocked to the M6 island.

Broad Heath Primary School announced yesterday it wil be closed today, with more school closures expected.
