GIRL’S ACT OF KINDNESS INSPIRED HELP FOR HOMELESS

- By CLAIRE HARRISON Nuneaton Reporter news@trinitymirror.com

A SUPER schoolgirl who spent her own pocket money on buying food for the homeless in Nuneaton town centre has inspired a much-appreciated charity donation.

Darci Bews was so stunned to see people sleeping rough on the streets of the town centre that the seven-year-old spent her own money on buying food for them.

This incredible act of kindness inspired her mum, Rosie, to look into how they could help the homeless.

Together with her eldest daughter and her friends, Rosie decided to do something to support Doorway, the Nuneatonbased charity which helps homeless 16 to 25-year-olds.

The mum-of-two is no stranger to fund-raising, having organised fun runs for the Georgie’s Gift charity and it is through her connection with the good cause that the donation came about.

She spoke to Matt and Paula Hall, who set-up Georgie’s Gift in memory of their ‘little princess’ Georgie who lost her young life to meningitis, and the couple were keen to help.

So Rosie and Darci, together with their friends, set about making ten special Christmas packages for Doorway to give out to the homeless, which included thermal clothing, food, toiletries and Greggs gift cards.

“The kids also decorated the boxes and also wrote Christmas cards for them too,” Rosie explained.

As well as the boxes, money donated by Georgie’s Gift was also used to ten buy rucksacks and pop-up tents which will be given out by Doorway, which is based in Dugdale Street, to those who are sleeping rough on the streets.

Matt Hall explained: “Last year we donated toys to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and this year we wanted to support those who each day may not know where they will be sleeping next.

“Doorway are a charity that do some fantastic work in supporting the homeless but are purely dependant on funds being raised to be able to carry out the work they do.

“Rosie’s children and friends helped decorate the boxes to give them a Christmassy feel while learning and understanding about the homeless and those less fortunate than others and what we can do to help them. Although it doesn’t seem much hopefully these items will make a bit of a difference to someone in need.”
