I simply Konta believe Selby was snubbed!

-

HOW did the panel pick Sunday’s 12 candidates for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and not include world snooker champion Mark Selby?

He has only won the gruelling world title THREE times in the last four years – 2014, 2016 and 2017. It’s unbelievable!

He is still the world’s No.1 and popular all around the globe, especially in China.

Mark has 494 century breaks and has won the major titles – 13 high-ranking, seven minor and another seven non-ranking.

He is great with the public and smartly turned out. The 34-year-old is a fine ambassador for his sport.

The BBC do not have as much sports coverage as they had but they do have the snooker!

I can hear you saying: “Okay, smart Newbon, who would you have left out instead?’’

Johanna Konta (24), who was the first British woman singles player to reach the Wimbledon semi-final since Virginia Wade in 1978 and rose to No.4 in the world.

She did not win Wimbledon. Selby has a far better claim.

Prince Harry is to marry Meghan Markle on FA Cup Final day.

I do not think there is much doubt which will get the bigger collective TV rating and general interest.

You could argue the wedding will not be exclusive to two channels in the UK, like the football will be.

But one national newspaper led its front page asking if the royal advisors had not realised it was Cup Final day?

I found that strange. Why would they anyway with a 5.30pm kick-off at Wembley? It was moved from its traditional 3pm start in 2012 to boost TV ratings.

It is still an important competition but it does not hold quite the appeal it used to when it was often the only live game of the season and attracted all-day TV coverage.

I am sure the Royal couple will be long wed by the time the usual suspects come out at Wembley!
