Great chants see City fans hit right note

- By GEORGE BAKER covsport@trinitymirror.com

SINGING from the stands is a fully-fledged part of football culture in the modern game and has been that way for many years.

Every club up and down the country has their unique take on popular chants to both spur on their team and antagonise their opponents.

The Sky Blues faithful are renowned for their incredible level of support, especially on away days – with 1,250 fans travelling on Boxing Day to Port Vale as well as sales for the January trip to Exeter City selling out almost instantly.

According to website, fanchants.com, City hold 71 hits in their songbook to date with classics such as ‘City till I Die’ and ‘Stand up if you love City’ being the main highlights.

Some of the more comical and dated chants to exist underneath the Coventry City tab are ‘Super Kevin Thornton’ and ‘Iain Dowie’s Sky Blue Army’. How times have changed!

While you may think that 71 songs would put the Sky Blues at the top of the table in terms of League Two clubs, you’d be somewhat mistaken.

The Sky Blue Army instead sit third in terms of League Two rankings with Exeter City positioned in second place with 133 chants, and topping the table is Chesterfield with an incredible 151 songs to their name.

Impressive numbers they may be, but they do not compete with the levels of Premier League giants Manchester United, who are said to possess a mammoth 548 chants, with North East side Newcastle United the closest competitors to the crown with 482 chants in their songbook.

These figures have been put together by www.fanchants. com which is the largest global archive of real football songs with over 25,000 in their archives.

All of the 25,000 songs are free to play at FanChants.com

You can also find all of the Sky Blues’ chants on both Spotify and iTunes, just search CCFC and listen to some of your favourite anthems. Iain Dowie
