Reid eyes longer stay with the U’s as loan deal finishes

- By ANDY TURNER

COVENTRY City winger Kyel Reid has made his intentions known as to where he wants to be when his loan deal comes to an end at Colchester United next month.

The 30-year-old has spoken to U’s head coach John McGreal about the possibility of staying longer at the Weston Homes Community Stadium rather than return to the Ricoh Arena.

The experienced forward has been on loan from the Sky Blues since August after falling out of favour under Mark Robins following claims by Reid that he had a ‘get out’ agreement if the club got relegated. That turned out not to be the case and the player was farmed out on a half season loan with no recall option.

He is due back on January 7 at a time when Robins is desperate for width, pace and creativity following the season ending injury to Jodi Jones, although it remains to be seen whether Robins will want him back to play a part in the second half push for promotion.

It had looked like Reid could be surplus to requirement at Colchester after a spell on the bench but he returned to Colchester’s league starting line-up for the first time in six weeks in their victory at Swindon Town last week.

He provided two assists in his side’s 3-2 win and the West Ham trainee says his U’s future will be determined in the coming weeks. “I’ve spoken to the gaffer and (assistant boss) Steve Ball about it and it’s something that we’re going to assess in a few weeks,” he said. “I’m enjoying my football here and it’s great for me and my family, so we’ll see what happens. There’s a lot of games coming up over the next few weeks and I’m hoping to play my part.”
