I knew Marc would start firing – Doyle

MICHAEL Doyle has hailed Marc McNulty as Coventry City’s new talisman.

The Sky Blues skipper always believed the striker would come good and an impressive eight goals in nine games has fired him to the top of the club’s goal scoring charts.

McNulty has a tally of 12 overall just past the halfway stage of the season and Doyle believes he’ll soon be racking up twos and threes rather than popping up with the odd match winning goal.

“Marc is our talisman now and everything that the manager and I thought he would be,” said the 36-year-old midfielder.

“He’s our main man, grown as the season has gone on and looks so good; unplayable at times. It’s just great that he keeps getting the goals and was unfortunate to only come away with one at Carlisle and again against Chesterfield. He should be getting twos and threes, and that’s the next step for him.”

“I’m delighted for him because I have known his quality that he has had all the time and people have questioned that. But he is such a good player and is only going to get better.

“I think the most important thing for Marc now is to keep training and getting that sharpness and match fitness because his quality, as we saw with his touch in the second half against Chesterfield when the keeper pulled off a great save, he’s a really good player and he should probably be playing at a level above.

“But the beauty for us is that he’s got a manager who believes in him and has given him the game time and stuck with him, and we’re reaping the benefits of it now.”

McNulty certainly appreciates the fact that Mark Robins has stuck by him, saying: “I got a bit of stick from the fans after a slow start but that’s fine.

“The most important thing was the manager, and all credit to him because it shows just how good a manager he is because I have played under managers before where if you’re not scoring you’re out of the team. The manager here has worked with me and talked to me every day in training and kept me feeling confident, saying that my luck will change, so it’s great that the gaffer has stuck by me. It’s just good to be playing in a team that’s playing on the front foot now.”
