ON-LOAN Coventry City winger Kyel Reid has put his Colchester United future at risk after U’s boss John McGreal slammed the midfielder for seeing red in Saturday’s League Two clash against Cheltenham Town.

Reid was given his marching orders in the 43rd minute of his last scheduled appearance at the Weston Homes Community Stadium for lashing out twice at Robins midfielder Joe Morell in the space of a few seconds.

At the time of his sending off Colchester were leading 1-0 but capitulated after being reduced to ten men, falling to a 4-1 defeat.

And after the game McGreal said Reid - who was due to report back to his parent club Coventry this week - had let the team down.

“I’ve seen it back on the video and there can be no excuses,” the manager told the East Anglian Daily Times.

“Kyel has let everyone down. He raised his arms, not once but twice. He’s let his side down.

“I think the sending off was a shock to the team, and it clearly affected us in the second half, especially with fatigue setting in after all the recent games.”

Still a Sky Blues player, Reid now faces a three match ban for a straight red card for violent conduct which could put his future in jeopardy at United.

His current loan deal expired after the Cheltenham defeat and with no news on whether that is to be extended or not, the winger could be in for an unsettling few days as his next move hangs in the balance.

The 30-year-old has spent the entirety of this season on loan at the Essex based club after stating in the summer he had an agreement with the Sky Blues that he could leave the Ricoh Arena following City’s relegation last season.

However, City boss Mark Robins revealed that there was nothing in writing.

Reid has appeared on 19 occasions so far this term, scoring three goals in the process and has played fairly regularly for McGreal’s men.

“I’m enjoying my football here and it’s great for me and my family, so we’ll see what happens in a couple of weeks,” Reid recently told the Colchester Daily Gazette.
