Hit-and-run driver

-

A SPEEDING Smart car driver who killed a cyclist in a hit-and-run crash has been jailed for six years.

Ugur Unlu, 23, had borrowed student Huseyin Kaygisiz’s white automatic Mercedes Smart car when he collided with 30-year-old Anita Szucs in Enfield in the early hours of February 6 last year.

He was going more than 50mph in a 20mph zone on Bounces Road as he attempted to overtake another car and hit Ms Szucs head-on as she made her way home to Enfield from a shift at Lidl. A HUGE fire which broke out in a block of toilets at Nottingham railway station is being treated as arson.

Around 60 firefighters tackled the blaze which started at 6.30am yesterday and spread to the main concourse and the roof.

A joint investigation between British Transport Police (BTP) and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue was launched, and BTP said last night they are treating the fire as arson.

The station was evacuated just before the morning rush hour, and the blaze caused widespread travel disruption across the city’s transport network.

Supt Sandra England, who is leading the BTP response, said: “Inquiries have been ongoing today and we now have reason to believe the fire may have been started deliberately.

“Officers are working to identify anyone who may have been involved in the incident, and we are appealing for information from members of the public.

“Fortunately, we have not had any reports of injuries as a result of the fire.

New transport minister Jo Johnson said: “We have seen an exemplary evacuation this morning, there were two to three hundred passengers at the start of the rush hour who were evacuated safely and nobody has been hurt.”
