A man ban? No thank you ma’am
THEY say when America sneezes the rest of world catches a cold meaning any new trend emitting from the States is sure to infect people elsewhere.
But when it comes to the latest fad to hit New York, I’m hoping there is a Lemsip ready and waiting in the UK to ensure it’s killed off before it takes hold.
The offending issue is what its founders call The Wing but what in reality is a shared workspace and social club designed exclusively for women.
There are already two locations of The Wing in NYC and now an abandoned tape factory in the trendy Dumbo neighbourhood of Brooklyn has been transformed into a third. A haven for females, it is equipped with lactation and “glam” rooms.
But as the £2,000 per year club is being lauded, not a mention is made of the male-female segregation that is at the heart of its business plan.
And while the plaudits roll in for such a new club, the launch of an equivalent male-only establishment would no doubt spark a fierce outcry and protests by angry women’s activists and possible legal action.
From what could have been a risky business model for the creators of The Wing initially, the slew of recent allegations of sexual misconduct by males now make it a guaranteed money-maker, capitalising on the mass suspicion of men.
As regular readers will know I fully support equality, not only in the workplace but in the pay packet too.
But, when I think about the concept of The Wing, I can’t help but ask myself when did further discrimination, this time against men, become a goal for some?
#MeToo? #Onlyus more like.
