HOMES PLAN ON SITE OF TOWN COLLEGE

- By CLAIRE HARRISON Nuneaton Reporter

HOMES could be built on the site of Nuneaton’s biggest college as part of plans to secure its future.

Large parts of land at the Hinckley Road campus of North Warwickshire and Hinckley College is set to be used for residential development.

College bosses have admitted that the current buildings are ‘too large’ for their requirements so a redevelopment plan has been drawn-up for the site.

This would include investment in some facilities to make them ‘fit for purpose in 21st century teaching’ and to use part of the current campus for residential purposes.

It is not clear what land would be used for houses, and whether it would come at the expense of existing facilities.

However, it has been revealed that the plans would lead to the controversial parking charge at the campus being axed.

But the college has stressed that before any plans are set in stone, they want to hear what residents think.

A public consultation will take place at the college on Tuesday between 1pm until 7pm, for people to go along and have their say.

A spokesperson from North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College said: “The College is currently engaged in a review of its facilities at its Nuneaton campus to ensure that it continues to provide a high-quality student experience and fit for future developments in the provision of further education. We believe that our success lies in making the connection between education and employment. Increasingly, training and skills development takes place at the point where it is needed most: on our business parks and industrial estates, in our town centres and hospitals, and on the premises of local employers. “Our current buildings are too large for our future requirements, which means our utilisation of space is becoming less cost effective. “We are, however, committed to retaining a strong presence in Nuneaton and our plans include high-quality campus facilities at our current location. We aim to invest in our facilities so that they are fit for purpose in a 21st century teaching and learning environment. We plan to raise the investment funds we need to improve our facilities through the re-development of part of the current campus for residential purposes.”

Speaking about the public consultation, the spokesperson added: “As part of the planning application process, the College is keen to allow local stakeholders and members of the community to comment on the plans as they develop. The proposals will also see the removal of the current parking tariff.

“The main purpose of this informal consultation event is to welcome comments on the proposed new housing development due to be constructed on land which the College plans to eventually sell.”
