PLANS for another block of student flats in Coventry have been given the green light.

The former Dairy Crest factory in Harper Road, Stoke, will be demolished to make way for the 266-bedroom scheme.

Developers Crosslane Group were given planning permission by the city council’s planning committee and say they new accommodation will be ready in time for the 2019/20 academic year.

The bedrooms will be spread across 50 ‘cluster flats’ of up to seven bedrooms with students sharing a lounge, kitchen and dining area.

There will also be communal facilities including a common room, a study hub and meeting space, gym and bike storage, as well as WiFi throughout the building.

Mike Moran, development manager at Crosslane Student Developments, said: “Crosslane is pleased to have secured planning consent successfully for its new purpose-built student accommodation development on Harper Road, Coventry, following extensive engagement with the local planning authority on the design and a public consultation process with local residents. “Following the recent successful planning application for its scheme at Friars Road in Coventry, Crosslane is looking forward to investing further in this fantastic student city and supporting the university’s growth ambitions, as well as helping to ease the wider housing shortage, by building and managing high-quality, centrally located student accommodation.”

The new building will be replace the old Dairy Crest depot - which has been empty for around five years and will range from three to six-storeys high, and have two car parking spaces and 132 cycle spaces.

The plans were originally submitted last year but then withdrawn just before Christmas amid concerns they would impact on a two-mile walk connecting Charterhouse to the city centre, as well as an off-road cycle route along the River Sherbourne from Gosford Street to Jaguar Land Rover.

Those routes are part of Coventry’s now successful UK City of Culture 2021 bid. However, changes were made and the new plans were granted approval.
