MOTORISTS are facing long overnight diversions over the next two weeks, as a major route is closed for roadworks.

A section of the A46 between Warwick and Coventry is shut overnight each night as Highways crews work to resurface the carriageways.

However, though the work is taking place on one side of the carriageway at a time, the diversion route is forcing motorists into a seven-mile diversion.

Having started on February 19, the works are expected to run until March 3, the first week seeing the northbound carriageway shut between 8pm and 6am, with the southbound lanes shut for the same amount of time during the second week.

The diversion route advises drivers to drive around Kenilworth, to bypass the works.

One Telegraph reader has slammed the “ridiculous diversion”.

She said: “Let’s see how many more accidents occur on the bends between Kenilworth and Balsall Common, and also lorries having to negotiate Field Gate Lane and New Street.

“Not forgetting the lights get turned out at midnight in Kenilworth to make matters worse.”

A spokesperson from Highways England said: “Works to resurface the A46 Kenilworth Bypass in both directions. The work will provide a smoother surface and a safer journey for all users. Work will only take place on one side of the carriageway at a time. Work will start on the northbound carriageway, switching to the southbound carriageway approximately midway through the scheme.

“To minimise disruption the work will be carried out at night. The road will remain open as usual during the day.

“Clearly signed diversion routes will be put in place and any necessary closures, which we have been agreed with the Warwickshire County Council.”
