We’ve turned a corner, says flanker Young

WASPS flanker Thomas Young believes the side has ‘turned a corner’ with their gripping victory over Exeter Chiefs.

The Welshman weighed in with a herculean effort at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday, smashing into 26 tackles, making yards aplenty and also weighing in with some turnovers to earn the BT Sports man of the match award.

“It’s nice but it’s easy when everyone else is playing well,” said Young.

“As a team we played very well and it meant a hell of a lot to us to win.

“We felt we owed them one from when we went down there at the start of the season. We were nowhere near where we thought we should be.

“We’ve hopefully turned a corner now. We all know this block of four is massive for us.”

The block of four began with a win at Harlequins when Wasps claimed a 44-22 victory with just 14 men, and that defensive resolve was on display once more to repel an Exeter Chiefs’ attacking force director of rugby young described as ‘potent’.

But the Aviva Premiership champions managed only one converted try for their afternoon’s efforts, and that came when Wasps were down to 14 men after Ashley Johnson’s yellow card as the black-and-golds once again answered the critics of their defensive endeavours.

Young said: “Everyone is going to try and criticise something, we know as a group our defence hasn’t been where it should be.

“We’re working hard, Phil (Blake) and the rest of the coaches are hard on us.

“But as players it’s down to us when we go out there on the pitch.

“They can only do so much on the training field. It’s up to us to take it out there on the pitch.

“At the moment things are going all right but there’s still a lot for us to do.”
