Flood concern over homes plan
A BID to turn leftover land at a former Nuneaton school site into places for people to live has hit the stumbling blocks.
Warwickshire County Council had planned to build 63 houses, 14 apartments and one, two-storey extra care apartment block of up to 60 units including demolition of existing buildings on part of the ex- Manor Park School grounds in Beaumont Road.
In fact, last year, the county council submitted a planning application to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council seeking permission to forge ahead with the proposals.
But it has now been revealed that the local authority was forced to temporarily withdraw the application over concerns about flood issues and traffic.
A Shire Hall spokesperson explained that they are still trying to gather all of the information required and hope to resubmit the application in a matter of weeks.
“An outline planning application for a combined extra care and housing development on the former site of Manor Park School was submitted to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council in April 2017, however this was temporarily withdrawn with a request for further information on specialist reports into flood mitigation and traffic survey/road safety.
“Warwickshire County Council is currently undertaking work to provide the necessary information to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and we hope to resubmit the planning application in the next six weeks.”
The plans for what used to be the home of the Manor Park secondary school, which now also houses a MacIntyre Discovery Academy, have been on the cards for several years. Previously the county council has spoken of the need to use some of the land to help provide much-needed accommodation for the growing elderly population.
The site was carved up, with part of it being earmarked for the MacIntyre Discovery Academy, which caters for learners with a range of needs, and the rest ear-marked for housing following the sad closure of Manor Park in July 2010. Both Manor Park School and Alderman Smith Schools were shut, and amalgamated into the Nuneaton Academy, which is based on Radnor Drive.
