Plan for hundreds of new homes in city centre

- By KATY HALLAM Chief Reporter

NEW plans have been unveiled for a £60million development creating hundreds of new homes in the city centre.

More than 250 apartments could be built for local residents in three tower blocks on the Dale Buildings site in Cook Street, which used to be home to BUPA, as part of a £165 million scheme to transform the Bishop Gate area of the city where the derelict 1970s Royal Mail sorting office once stood.

They would be up to 14 storeys high and would sit next to five student tower blocks - three of which are currently being built to house around 700 students.

The new plans from Barberry Developments also include a further block of 34 apartments for local residents - as well as even more student accommodation.

Six new townhouses are now also planned to provide a further 72 student bedrooms on the Bishop Gate East site on Cook Street.

The new developments would be built under a £45 million build-torent scheme.

Work is already well underway on phase one of the project to deliver three of the new student accommodation towers, which previously attracted criticism from Telegraph readers who wanted more homes for local people.

The three towers are now standing on the site of the former Royal Mail depot and several floors have already been completed on the tallest, which stands at nearly 165ft.

Coventry University students are expected to be able to move in ready time for the new academic year in September.

Plans to create a further two tower blocks for students under phase two of the scheme are currently under review by council planners.

An application for the 260 new homes - which would be phase four - and the townhouses with students accommodation - phase three - is set to be submitted to Coventry City Council later this year.

It brings the total development value of Barberry schemes in Coventry to more than £165 million.

Barberry director Henry Bellfield said the new plans would provide “much-needed homes for local people. This phase of our Bishop Gate redevelopment promises to deliver almost 300 high quality apartments and six townhouses comprising 72 student bedrooms.

“It will provide much-needed homes for local people which will help to revitalise the 24-hour economy in the heart of the city.”

The new plans for Bishop Gate East were revealed at MIPIM – the world’s biggest property development and investment show in Cannes, France – where the company is part of the Coventry and Warwickshire MIPIM Partnership.

The latest announcement comes just a day after an incredible £100million vision was revealed for a derelict gasworks site in Coventry city centre.

Plans for 700 homes in more than a dozen new tower blocks form the centrepiece of the proposed development at the former National Grid site in Abbotts Lane. The ambitious project is also being unveiled at the MIPIM show in France.
