ONE of Nuneaton’s biggest charity organisations which has helped the community for half a century has folded.

It has been announced that Nuneaton Lions Club has been forced to close down.

Sadly the news comes in the year that the group is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The club has donated thousands of pounds to good causes over the past five decades and champions the town’s civic bonfire, although it is understood that the event will still go-ahead.

Bad news was on the cards when a plea was made for new members at the start of the year but it was not enough to save the group and the announcement was made at the weekend.

A statement from the club reads: “It is with immense sadness that we confirm that Nuneaton Lions have, in their 50th year ended their involvement in Nuneaton. Lions have proudly served their community raising money for individuals and groups, with every penny raised going back to the community of Nuneaton.

“All money left in the the bank has been distributed to groups or charities selected by the remaining members and the chains of office will go on display in the Mayor’s parlour, to be available if Nuneaton Lions should be re-formed in the future.

“We wish all of our supporters and followers well in their efforts to help others. The civic bonfire will hopefully continue with the Round Table at the helm.”

Nuneaton Memories, which champions the town’s rich history, was among the first to pay tribute.

“Nuneaton Lions is best known for organising Nuneaton Civic Bonfire and Firework Display in November.

“They also organised many other fund raising events throughout the year, indeed Nuneaton Memories were supported by Nuneaton Lions, many local good causes will miss them greatly.”
