Davies ‘desperate’ to win back place

COVENTRY City boss Mark Robins is relishing a forthcoming selection headache for the final push for League Two promotion.

The Sky Blues boss is set to welcome back centre-half Tom Davies from a broken collarbone while fellow defender Jordan Willis insists he’s ahead of schedule in his recovery from an ankle injury – a huge boost to City’s defensive options as the season draws to a climax.

And the manager has revealed that Davies, who is closest of the two to returning to action, is “desperate” to win back his place in the back four where Dominic Hyam has been in outstanding form since being called upon to cover for his injured team-mates who had previously been ahead of him in the pecking order.

Hyam, who is still only 22, has started the last five games alongside Rod McDonald for City, helping to keep three clean sheets in the process.

But Robins will welcome the return of players back from injury, knowing full well that they will keep the current central pairing on their toes.

“That’s why we have a squad and it’s going to be interesting,” he said.

“We have Tom Davies who wants to push his way back in and he is desperate to get back in which is brilliant for us and it makes the players maintain their performance.

“But the current two haven’t put a foot wrong really, and long may that continue because we have eight games to go and that’s a lot of football to be played.”

Robins has confirmed that Davies is back in training.

The defender has been sidelined since suffering a broken collar bone in the defeat at Forest Green Rovers at the start of February.

The 25-year-old has played 21 games so far this season but isn’t ready to add to that tally just yet.

Robins said: “Davies is training again and he’s joined in this week and he’s been part of training sessions that we’ve done.

“It’s probably a little bit earlier than we thought, but he’s feeling good about it so we will look at him for next week.

“However, that might probably be too early for the physios as they want Tom Davies and, below, Jordan Willis could be nearing a comeback for Sky Blues

him absolutely 100%, but he’s pushing and I’m happy for him to do that as long he’s alright.

“He knows his body, as long as we’re not doing anything stupid we will try to get him back as quickly as we can.”

Willis, meanwhile, revealed at the weekend that he was two to three weeks away from a return.
