GB at home for play-offs in Davis Cup

- Duncan Weir

TENNIS: Great Britain face a home tie against Uzbekistan in the Davis Cup World Group play-offs in September.

Britain must win to continue their five-year stay at the elite level of the competition after losing their first-round clash with Spain in February.

Cameron Norrie performed heroics in the absence of Andy Murray and Kyle Edmund, who could both potentially be available for the tie from September 14-16.

It is a kind draw for Leon Smith’s side, who will play at home for the first time since 2016.

Denis Istomin, the world number 83, is the only Uzbek player ranked in the top 300.

RUGBY UNION: Worcester Warriors have snapped up Scotland international Duncan Weir for next season.

Fly-half Weir, 26, becomes Warriors’ tenth signing for 2018/2019 after putting pen to paper on a one-year deal.

Weir has won 27 caps for his country since his debut against France in the 6 Nations in 2012 and moved to Edinburgh in 2016 where he was the club’s top points scorer in his debut campaign. He has gone on to rack up 221 points in 30 games during his time at BT Murrayfield Stadium.

Warriors boss Alan Solomons said: “Duncan is a top-class player who possesses experience at the highest level in the game.”

Weir added: “Warriors have shown this season that they can beat any team on their day. I am looking forward to working hard to help the club have a successful 2018/19 campaign.”

FOOTBALL: England women now top their World Cup qualifying group after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in Sarajevo.

Toni Duggan and Jodie Taylor (penalty) got the goals.
