Pub car park student complex gets go ahead

THREE-STOREY DEVELOPMENT WILL FEATURE 41 STUDIO APARTMENTS

PLANS for a new student accommodation complex in Coventry have been given the green light.

Some 41 studio apartments are to be built as part of a three-storey student block on the land behind The Humber Pub, on Humber Road.

The plans were submitted to Coventry City Council late last year, and were approved on Friday. It has confirmed that The Humber pub will remain open.

The proposal, submitted by Punch Partnerships (PML) Limited will see the flats built upon the pub’s current car park and beer garden.

The new accommodation will consist of seven en-suite studio units on the ground floor, 17 en-suite studio units on the first floor, 17 en-suite studio units on the second floor, a common room and study room, alongside a reception, office, refuse store, accessible WC, cycle storage and laundry room.

With the exception of five spaces for visitors, no parking will be provided for residents of the new build, located in the Lower Stoke area of the city.

A reorganised car parking area for 20 vehicles, and a outdoor patio area for the pub also form part of the plans.

Located less than a mile from Coventry University, this is just one of several student accommodation projects taking place across the city.

While demolition is taking place at the former student block on Priory Street, projects elsewhere across the city will see homes for hundreds of students be built in the coming months. This includes the massive Bishop Gate build, and the 18-storey block at Whitefriars Lane.

In a document submitted to the council as part of the application process, it says: “These proposals will make effective use of a previously developed brownfield site, establishing additional housing within what is predominately a residential location. These proposals will significantly improve the appearance of the site, removing the existing large structure and opening up the site to provide additional visual interest.

“It is concluded that the proposals represent a sustainable development.

“The proposals will effectively re-use a developed site within the defined settlement boundary of Coventry to provide much-needed student accommodation in a location that is in close proximity to Coventry University.”
