Rape charity hits out at alleged sick chat
VILE COMMENTS CONDEMNED BY CITY GROUP AS UNIVERSITY SUSPENDS 11 UNDER INVESTIGATION
A COVENTRY rape charity has revealed its shock at jokes allegedly made by students at Warwick University about raping women.
The disgusting comments were made in a messenger group chat and screenshots revealed phrases such as “Sometimes it’s fun to just go wild and rape 100 girls” and “What do we do with girls? RAAAAAAAAAPE.”
An investigation has been launched by the University of Warwick and 11 male students have been suspended.
The screenshots, which have been sent to university bosses, also included racial and anti-semitic slurs such as “p**is” and “love Hitler, hate n **** s and jews and Corbyn”.
Reacting to the news, Sylvie Maguire, deputy chief executive Officer of the Coventry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (Crasac), said: “The offensive comments exposed in the group chat highlight that harmful victim blaming attitudes still exist. “It is views like these that can prevent victims from disclosing or reporting abuse and so it is right that the university are taking this issue seriously. “Crasac have been working in partnership with the University of Warwick to raise awareness around the issue of sexual violence and ensure that effective support pathways are in place for anyone who may need them. “We would encourage anyone affected by this issue to contact our helpline on 02476 277777.” A University of Warwick spokesman said: “A possible student disciplinary incident is currently being actively investigated. “We cannot comment further on this matter until those investigations, and any subsequent disciplinary processes, are concluded.” Meanwhile a spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We are aware of matters relating to a social media group involving a number of students and are liaising with Warwick University.” For more information on Coventry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre call 024 7627 7777, email helpline@crasac.org. uk or text 07936 816130.
