Cardiff is the rainiest city in the UK, new analysis has revealed.

Figures from the Met Office show that some 1,152mm of rain falls on the city per year.

Data was found by analysing the 25 cities with the largest populations and calculating their total average rainfall since 1981.

There are five cities, including Cardiff, with an average annual rainfall of more than 1,000mm.

The second rainiest city in the UK is Glasgow. Some 1,124mm of rain is recorded on average there each year. Leeds and Bradford both have 1,024mm of rainfall per year. The figure is the same because the two cities share a weather station in Bingley. Plymouth has an average of 1,007mm of rain, Belfast 944mm and Manchester 867mm.

Liverpool has an average of 837mm and Sheffield 835 mm.

Birmingham has 802mm, Stokeon-Trent 806mm and Bristol 802mm.

Southampton (723mm) and Brighton (723mm) are the 12th and 13th rainiest cities..

Also sharing a weather station are Nottingham and Derby, meaning they both measure 709mm of rainfall on average.

Perhaps surprisingly, just 704mm of rainfall is measured in Edinburgh.

Some 700mm is recorded in Coventry across a year.

Hull sees 680mm of rain, while Leicester has 675mm on average. Portsmouth has 699mm of rain. Some 638mm is recorded in Northampton, ahead of Reading’s 635mm.

The second driest major city is Newcastle - with 597mm of rain.

The driest city of all is London. Just 557mm of rain is recorded in the capital over an average 12 months.

The rainiest month on average is October in Cardiff, when 134mm of rainfall is recorded. That is more than three times the rainfall measured in the driest month of the year - July in London, with just 35mm of rainfall. July is also the hottest month recorded by London’s weather station in Greenwich, which reaches 23.4°C on its average hottest day. The coldest month of the year is February, where the temperature gets down to 0.3°C on average in Leeds and Bradford.
