ASTON Martin has unveiled more details about its plans to revive the legendary Lagonda luxury marque.

The Warwickshire car maker has said its first Lagonda model will be a zero emissions SUV.

Set to be unveiled in 2021, it will be just the first in a range of state of the art, emission-free luxury vehicles.

Aston Martin first revealed its Lagonda ‘Vision Concept’ at the 2018 Geneva motor show in March.

The Gaydon-based firm said it will be the first luxury SUV exclusively driven by zero emission powertrain technologies and uphold the qualities one would expect to be associated with the reinvented super-luxury marque. Set to feature an evolution of the bold design language seen with the Vision Concept, Aston Martin has pledged the first Lagonda will be “ultra-stylish” and “supremely luxurious”.

“In reviving one of the most iconic names in motoring we have created a unique opportunity,” said Aston Martin president and chief executive officer, Dr Andy Palmer.

“The Lagonda SUV is the first of its kind – a spacious, high-performance 4x4 that successfully reconciles a love of technology, luxury and style.”

Aston Martin EVP and chief creative officer Marek Reichman added: “The Lagonda SUV will retain the boldness of the Vision Concept.

“Lagonda is a luxury brand, but it is also one rooted in technology.

“It will be like no other SUV to drive, so its looks have to reflect that new reality and to serve as pathfinder to a future in which the most desirable and prestigious automobiles still have a place.” In Geneva earlier this year Aston Martin said it hopes to have two Lagonda models on sale by 2023.

Aston Martin has pledged Lagonda will remain faithful to the forward thinking and adventurous spirit of Wilbur Gunn, who founded the marque in a greenhouse at his home in Staines, Middlesex, in 1904.

A visionary whose talents stretched from opera singing to riverboat building, he named his company after the Lagonda Creek river that ran through the town of Springfield in his native Ohio.

In its 1930s heyday Lagonda produced V12-engined limousines for royalty and sports cars capable of winning Le Mans, which one did in 1935. Bought by Aston Martin in 1947, Lagonda continued to innovate and will be remembered by many for the striking and very daringly designed Aston Martin Lagonda of the 1980s and 1990s.
